Davies on his library

Image:  Some commentaries on my new shelves.

I've been building some bookshelves the last couple of weeks in our basement to hold my library and ran across this anecdote concerning Samuel Davies from T. T. Ellis:

Davies was not afraid of study.  He never spent less than four days on preparation of any sermon worthy of the name.  He wrote to his brother-in-law in Williamsburg:  "I have a peaceful study, as a refuge from the hurries and noises of the world around me; the venerable dead are waiting in my library to entertain me from the nonsense of surviving mortals."
